Happy Memorial Day

The work of a soldier, a sailor, a marine and a pilot are the hardest on earth. They risk their bodies, their minds and their lives. The pay is low, the work is harrowing, and the thanks afterward, for the living and the dead, is often inadequate. We are the luckiest people on earth to have had the bravest, proudest, most professional and least corruptible warriors throughout our history, right up to the current day.

To even get started, the United States needed soldiers. From the very beginning, those soldiers were underpaid, under-equipped, and had an impossible assignment. Some things don't change.

There are those who died far away from comfort, there are those who foreswore comfort to serve for life who then died in that service, and there are those who served their lives, great men like Washington, Grant, Nimitz, MacArthur, Patton, and so many more, who served and then "faded away" who still inspire us.

Their sacrifice has made us the most fortunate and luckiest human beings on earth. Happy Memorial Day to all of them!

I'm glad I don't have writers' block anymore. Oh, yeah, the subject ! . . .

I confess I've been fooling around on the side.
